The information in this letter should help you become more familiar with the problems regarding Year 2000 Compliance and give you an understanding of how conscientiously and diligently the P.H. Glatfelter Company addresses this task.

The material provided herein is intended for general information purposes and should not be interpreted as a specific recommendation by the P.H Glatfelter Company for action on your part.

The Year 2000 Issue:

Computers began entering the corporate environment in the 1960’s. At that time, disk data storage systems were very expensive. Hence, less data meant significant savings to corporations. This was particularly true when storing date-sensitive information. Therefore, the use of a two-digit code rather than a four-digit code to indicate a calendar year was introduced and soon became common practice.

A few years ago, however, it was determined that this very practice may have a significant disruptive effect on every aspect of private and corporate business entering the upcoming century. Furthermore, it was found that these problems could not only be confined to a few individuals or companies, but to the entire global business world as companies and individuals alike interact with and are dependent upon one another. Another dimension to Year 2000 compliance is added by the fact that the year 2000 is a leap year.

Although the Year 2000 issue seems to be a simple data storage issue, it has the potential to affect any electronic device.
